MATERIALS:

Ober, Hanson, et al. Gregg College Keyboarding & Document Processing (Home Use), 9th Edition. Glencoe Division of McGraw-Hill. Package includes textbook, Microsoft Word Manual, CD, and a bookstand.

DESCRIPTION:

This is a beginning course in keyboarding using the touch method. The course will emphasize acquiring basic keyboarding skills and applications for personal use. The course will incorporate Microsoft Word 2003 for such applications as reports, letters, memos, and tables.

GOALS:

Keyboard by touch using proper keyboarding techniques

Produce a timed writing with at least 25 wpm for 3 minutes

Utilize Microsoft Word 2003 in preparing reports, letters, memos, and tables

REQUIREMENTS:

All students are expected to attend class regularly and to complete assignments. Students are responsible for any missed assignments or handouts if absent. No makeup quizzes will be given. It is required that students bring data disks and the text to each class meeting. The course schedule lists due dates for assignments. No late work will be accepted. It is the student’s responsibility, not the instructor’s, to notify the Admissions Office when dropping the course.

Students must devote at least three hours per week in the computer lab completing assignments, and must also be responsible for keeping a log of computer lab hours as well as hours spent completing assignments at home.

EVALUATION:

Grades will be based on performance in keyboarding technique (20%), document processing, which includes quizzes and the final (50%), and skill development that includes three-minute timed writings (30%).
