- FINAL EXAM REMINDER:Our official time is Tues 12/11 at 1030-1230
in PS 175. And you may also take the exam with my other ftf courses
at Tues 12/11 8-10 in LA 216 or Thurs 12/13 at 8-10 in LA 216.
There are no later exams, as I must get grades in by Friday.
So if these 3 times do not work for you, please VOICEMAIL me
at x. 1983 at DVC with a CLEAR message about your name, number,
situation. Practically speaking the alternate times beyond the
above ones would be Tues/Wed at the m/u test center in FO 234.
Let me know if necessary. All assignments are due in by this
Thurs 12/13, if not sooner!
- You'll need a pen, pencil, scantron 2052, and a rested mind.
I'm emailing review/hints onto the webct email today.
- This coming week is midterm 2 week. 11/1 in the same place,
PS 175 at 11-1215. I imagine I'll see most of you there. Here
are some other options: 11/1 in LA216 at either 8 am or 930 am,
and you can take the test with my ftf students. If those early
times don't work, we can schedule a specific test time in the
make-up test center in FO 234. If that will be necessary for
you please email me on webct asap , with the SUBJECT HEADER telling
me "TEST TIME!!!" Additionally, I am extending the
FILM REVIEW deadline to 11/8. That is so you can concentrate
on exam for
now!
- Just a friendly reminder that all your lecture notes on this
website are up, and that the textbook website link to your left
here will take you to your quizzes, and you need to complete
2 of them and send the results to me at webct.. Keep up on your
project and 2 BB postings ,also over on webct. Those assignments
are basically C/NC, and so do not worry terribly about them---
but DO them!!! Then, the actual midterm later this month, for
which you have a study guide, and which we discussed on our first
day, will be graded with points. That and the second midterm
and final exam count for most of your grade-- so you will want
to do your best.
- Thanks to all who attended our first meeting Thursday. Any
of you who could not be there--- read my emails to you on Webct.
The unit 1 handouts live in the wooden box next to my office
door at FO 132. The course syllabus lives here, above, in aqua.
Lecture notes are above in green---- keep up on reading and quizzes,
and you'll be set! There is a "1st day checklist" on
the second page of the handout packets. Make sure you can do/know/understand
all the items!
- Welcome to Anthropology
130 online! Fall
2007! The is the main "home" website for both sections
of our course. This course is on Cultural
Anthropology,
looking at living cultures around the world today, both
at general patterns as well as at interesting details of
daily
life.
- The first required face to face (ftf) meeting is
8/23 . This is being held in the library classroom
202, past the main desk and to the left on the upper floor.
You will meet at 11-1215.
We will cover a lot of introductory material.
This includes the fields of anthropology, WebCt, bulletin
board discussions, how to use this main website, tests, lectures,
a student survey, handouts and readings for you to do, various
checklists, how to do online database searches using our
library's electronic databases, and more!
- Our course syllabus lives on the aqua syllabus
page, see tab above. It changes! New material
is added cumulatively, as is true on this home page. Keep checking!
I'll print out the first partial syllabus for our first meeting.
The other pages include a list of due dates, my contact info,
resources, and very importantly, lecture notes, which
are posted over the course of the whole semester.
- Meanwhile, you can get your text: Haviland
et al, Cultural Anthropology, 11th edition and start
reading chapters 1 and 2. Also, explore the textbook
link to your left-- there are tons of great resources
there. Likewise, look at the DVC website link as
well, with special attention to the libraray's vast
array of online journals, databases, and fantastic resources.
The WebCT component for this course is NOT
home (this is home here), and is not yet operational. We will
use it for discussions and email.
- Finally, the Anthro in the News link to
the left is fun, and has current popular and scientific press
links for newsworthy stories that include anthropological issues
(for example, the cross cultural aftermath of the tsunami,
or the follow up to the Homo "hobbit" discovered
recently-- not to mention ongoing discussion of Iraq, Somalia,
ancient Egyptian archaeology, and scores of other current and
older cultures).
- Note: our url is: http://voyager.dvc.edu/%7Efrickenbach/classes/anthro130%2Df07/default.html
Paste it into your browser ( Obviously you are here already,
so you have it, but it doesn't hurt to duplicate the address)
and then add to your bookmarks or favorites. Meanwhile, I am
working on the actual links themselves.
- The Webct portion of our course can be reached in many different
ways. The link to the left , or log on to dvc.edu and click
on the left column link to Webct. If you arrived here using
the link in Webct, you obviously hit the "back" key to go back
there, too! In any case, log on to our class, read your mail
, and you can
get
started
with
your
first
"bulletin board (BB) " discussion topic in unit 1/part
1. This will be a brief introduction of yourself and you'll
include
cultural, family, educational, religious, or other information
to the degree you feel comfortable. Plus you'll add a link
to an interesting website, so when your classmates read your
intro, they'll also have a place to explore. We'll also cover
this in our first meeting in case you are having trouble.
