In October 2004 I had the extreme fortune to attend an Association for Business Communication conference in Boston. Why was I so fortunate? Because the conference happened to take place during the last week in October. If you're a baseball fan, you'll know that this is the week that the Boston Red Sox broke the "Curse of the Bambino" and won the World Series. And I was there for everything!

Yes, I was there when Boston swept St. Louis to win their first World Series since 1918, the year they traded Babe Ruth. (And this historic win followed the Red Sox making it to the World Series by beating the hated New York Yankees in the playoffs, in Game 7 after being down 3 games to 0--the greatest comeback in baseball history.)  I was there to see these truly devoted Red Sox fans go wild, I got to read all of the newspaper articles firsthand, I attended the victory parade, and I toured Fenway Park the day after the parade. I was even there for Halloween!

And it this weren't enough, all of this took place the week before the 2004 presidential election, with John Kerry, a Boston resident, running against George W. Bush. Yes, Boston was a city filled with elation for the Red Sox and hope that a native son would make it to the White House. And I managed to capture a lot of this magic in these photos. Enjoy!

The Charles Street Inn in the historic Beacon Hill area of Boston -- my home away from home!

The cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill are lined with charming townhomes, most built in the 1800s.

Everywhere you looked there were pumpkins and American flags

And, of course, Red Sox posters and banners!

Cheers was right around the corner from my inn

And the famous Public Garden was right down the street

No trip to Boston is complete without a trip to Harvard -- this is the famed Harvard Yard

I also took a boat tour -- here's the Boston skyline as seen from Boston Harbor

I fell in love with Boston's North End, the Italian district

Where you'll find the best pizza in Boston -- Regina's!

One of Harvard's renowned rowing teams practicing along the Charles River

And then they did it -- the Red Sox won the World Series. Here's the State Capitol's congratulatory sign.

And the crowds swarmed the streets for the victory parade -- rain and all!

Red, white, and blue confetti everywhere!

The players rode through the streets in Duck Tour Boats

Here are Derek Lowe and Pedro Martinez, having a ball!

And the fans were having a great time too, long after the parade went by!

Signs of victory were everywhere

And then, suddenly, I found him -- the bravest man in Boston!

The day after the victory parade, I toured world-famous Fenway Park

And what an historic park it is

The playing field, with the Green Monster in the background

And there I am, actually sitting in the Green Monster!

We even got to sit in the Press Box

There's no doubt that this is America's most beloved ballpark!

What a glorious fall day to be walking through a park in Boston

And then it was Halloween -- even the pumpkins got in on the celebration!

R.I.P. 1918 indeed!

Why is this little boy so happy? Because he just got candy from John Kerry's secret serviceman (in background)

Well, the election may not have turned out the way Bostonians wanted it, but this is a week no one will ever forget!
