Transfer Information

The Diablo Valley College sports medicine/athletic training program can be very helpful if you wish to transfer to a four-year college/university and are interested in becoming a health care provider. Former program students have gone on to transfer to four-year schools to become:

• Athletic Trainers
• Physician Assistants
• Physical Therapists
• Nurses

Other professions in which this program can help you are:

• Physicians
• Chiropractor
• Occupational Therapists

If you are interested in one of these areas, you can major in the appropriate professional program directly from DVC when you transfer (for professions like athletic training and nursing), or you must complete a bachelor’s degree prior to entering the professional program (all of the listed professions require or have options for entry-level masters degree programs). If you are going through the second option you can major in nearly anything, but typically the most common and appropriate majors are kinesiology, biology, physiological sciences, etc.

The information about transfer schools for these different professions can be found here.

There are 16 athletic training education programs in California and over 350 throughout the country(www.caate.net). The California, programs are all at CSU or private universities i.e. no UCs.

If you wish to transfer you are encouraged to complete the associate degree. Why?

• Many of the major requirements articulate at 4-year schools. Articulation means that a course that you take at DVC fulfills a requirement at the target school and you will not have to take that course again once you transfer.

• In addition to the major courses, completion of the degree requires that you complete general education requirements. All four-year schools require you to finish a specific sequence of general education requirements as well as courses in your major. By picking your courses appropriately, you can fulfill most, if not all, of your general education programs while at DVC.

If you are interested in transferring you can use the sequence of courses on this website as a starting point for scheduling, but you are urged to speak to a counselor and/or program faculty to guide your course selection. It is also recommended that you visit schools you are interested in attending so that you may pick the school that is most appropriate for you and your professional goals.

Some schools that articulate a substantial number of DVC major courses include:

• CSU Fresno*
• CSU Fullerton*
• CSU Sacramento*
• CSU San Diego*
• Chapman*
• UOP*

Schools that articulate some of DVC major courses include:

• Cal State East Bay
• CSU Northridge*
• Humboldt State
• San Jose State*
• San Francisco State

* These schools have an athletic Training Education program

Additional information about transferring can also be found at the DVC Transfer Center webpage and in section II of the DVC catalog.
