Athletic trainers are rehabilitation and physical medicine specialists who have traditionally worked with athletes in academic and professional sports settings, but who are now found in a variety of health care settings. The Sports Medicine/Athletic Training Program at Diablo Valley College is designed for students interested in becoming athletic trainers or other allied health care professionals such as physical therapists, physician assistants or nurses. It combines academic, laboratory and clinical experiences and is primarily designed to prepare students for further study at a four-year school although it can help those interested in obtaining entry-level employment as a physical therapy aide. It is a 60-unit course of study that leads to an associate in science degree.
