The Diablo Valley College fitness instruction program can be very helpful if you wish to transfer to a four-year college/university and are interested in becoming a:
• Strength and conditioning coach
• Physical education teacher
• Personal trainer (a bachelor’s degree is a requirement to sit for some national personal training certification exams)
• It may also be helpful for some health care careers Generally, if you are interested in these areas, you will major in kinesiology when you transfer. Most all CSU schools have a kinesiology major, as do a number of private colleges/universities. The UC system does not offer undergraduate programs in kinesiology except UC Davis, which has an exercise biology degree. The Davis program is for students interested in careers in health care or as a college instructor/researcher. If you wish to transfer you are encouraged to complete the associate degree (if you complete your associate degree, you automatically complete all of your requirements for the certificate too!). Why? • Many of the major requirements articulate at 4-year schools. Articulation means that a course that you take at DVC fulfills a requirement at the target school and you will not have to take that course again once you transfer. • In addition to the major courses, completion of the degree requires that you complete general education requirements. All four-year schools require you to finish a specific sequence of general education requirements as well as courses in your major. By picking your courses appropriately, you can fulfill most, if not all, of your general education programs while at DVC. If you are interested in transferring you can use the sequence of courses on this website as a starting point for scheduling, but you are urged to speak to a counselor and/or program faculty to guide your course selection. It is also recommended that you visit schools you are interested in attending so that you may pick the school that is most appropriate for you and your professional goals. Some schools that articulate a substantial number of DVC major courses include: • CSU Fresno
• CSU Fullerton
• CSU Northridge
• CSU Sacramento
• CSU San Diego
• Chapman
• UOP Schools that articulate some of DVC major courses include: • San Jose State
• San Francisco State
• Humboldt State
• Cal State East Bay
Additional information about transferring can also be found at the DVC Transfer Center webpage and in section II of the DVC catalog.
