 Instructor’s viewpoint

As mathematics instructors, we are continually looking for methods to improve the dynamic between learning and instruction.  With this grant project, instructors are using HP tablet computers to enhance the learning experience.  The tablets are equipped with Classroom Presenter and mathematical software, such as Mathematica.  Instructors choose two projects for students to complete over the course of the semester.   The projects include problems relevant to the course, data collection, and modeling the data along with usage of mathematical software.   Some examples of the completed projects as well as student feedback can be accessed from the homepage of this site.

In addition to the projects, instructors utilize Classroom Presenter as a means of engaging students in the classroom.  With the tablet computers, instructors can easily give students problems to do in class, either individually or in groups, and require students to submit their responses using Classroom Presenter.  The instructor can then broadcast the solutions to the class and conduct a discussion about which answer is most appropriate.

Instructors involved in the grant project have found the experience to be beneficial to their classroom environment.  The students are excited about using technology and are much more involved in daily activities when using Classroom Presenter.  Students also find the projects helpful to their understanding of Calculus.  Instructors have found their retention rates higher and an increased level of interest in the class due to the usage of projects and technology.
